The Pope Abdicates

The Pope quits. Abdicates. Gives up. Why don’t take this further? Why don’t take advantage of the momentum and keep changing?

I was baptized as a catholic. I was 13, old enough to understand that I believe in something that could be God, and make a choice for an organization that, at least, did not segregate women during Mass, and gave voice to people who disagree with a system that didn’t allow any opposing voice.

As I grew older, I stop going to church on Sundays. I understood as discriminative and criminal The Vatican’s opposition to contraception, its overwhelming wealth in a world with so much poverty, its blindness to the urges of times, its support to the abusive treatment to the Irish Magdalenas… I didn’t know back then the scandal of the coverup of rapist priests, rapers of kids.

Today the news are bringing a shocking story. The Pope Benedict XVI has abdicated, or will do so later on February, so by March the Catholics will have a new Pope. According the news, this is not unprecedented, but certainly a milestone on modern times.

Ratzinger says his health deteriorates, so he’s not fit for the ministry in today’s “rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary”. Well, John Paul II was Pope despite his Parkinson, until his very late day… And I would say the early 2000’s were actually pretty shaky times as well, remember 9/11/2001 and how the world fully changed afterwards? (This is not to say John Paul did right, but to notice the huge change of the mindset!)

So, the times bring changes, so the Vatican, or a very important someone inside the Vatican, reacts with change. Why do not take the momentum and push it further? Why the Catholic power doesn’t take a leap of faith, of goodwill, of humility and of every virtue that Jesus Christ praised and gives up its condition of State? To begin with?

Why does a religion need to become a State? A State with very suspicious origins, considering Mussolini was involved. A state where is born, and some people die in the middle of insane wealth. A state with an average income and GDP per capita superior to that of countries like Haiti and Burkina Faso.

The Vatican should quit its status. The Vatican should actually sell the Vatican Museum and devote that money to help Haiti and Burkina Faso, at least.

The Vatican power should encourage change and allow priest to get married, out of love and not economic interest. If it would do so, it’s very likely that this shortage of priests would end. At least, they would stop attracting these dark characters that are making the news.

The Vatican should support Science and scientific students, as sometimes they support some charities.

The Vatican should support gays and lesbians, and condemn rape, genocide, tyrants.

The Vatican should not condemn two married people because they want a divorce, because they found out they don’t longer belong to each other.

The Vatican should recognize every mistake and atrocity made through History, apologize and start again from there.
